Privacy policy
Last updated 16 October 2026
The short version
- Chukta keeps track of shared expenses between you and your friends. We collect only what that needs.
- No ads. We never sell your data, and we don’t use analytics or advertising trackers.
- Your groups and expenses are visible only to the people in them.
- You can ask for a copy of your data or delete your account at any time.
What we collect
- From Google, when you sign in: your name, email address and profile photo. We never see your Google password.
- What you add: groups, expenses (amount, currency, description, category, date, notes), who paid and who owes, settle-up payments you record, and comments.
- Friends you add who aren’t on Chukta yet: the name and email address you enter, so they can claim their place when they join.
- Your profile settings: your UPI ID (only if you add it) and your default currency.
- No receipt photos yet: receipt scanning isn’t available. We’ll update this policy before it launches.
- If you import from Splitwise: the groups, expenses and friends’ names in what you choose to bring over.
- Crash reports, if they’re turned on: what went wrong, the app version, and your device model and operating system.
- A notification token, if you allow notifications, so we can deliver them to your device.
On your device, Chukta stores your sign-in session and preferences such as light or dark mode, so you stay signed in. We don’t use cookies for tracking.
Why we use it
Only to run Chukta: to work out and show balances, let the people in a group see what they share, build UPI payment links, send the notifications you ask for, import your Splitwise history, and fix bugs. We don’t profile you and we don’t use your data for advertising.
Who can see your information
- People in a group with you, and anyone you share a one-to-one expense with, can see your name, email address, profile photo and UPI ID (if you added one), plus the expenses, payments and comments you share with them.
- One-to-one expenses are visible only to the people in them. Nobody else on Chukta can see your groups or balances.
- The database enforces this itself (row-level security), not just the app.
We use a few service providers to run Chukta. They process data only on our behalf:
- Supabase — database, sign-in and file storage, hosted in Singapore.
- Google — sign-in.
- Cloudflare — serves the web app at app.getchukta.in and the website at getchukta.in.
- Cloudflare Email Routing and Gmail — receive the email you send to [email protected].
- Sentry — crash reports, when enabled.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple’s push service — deliver notifications, if you allow them.
We share information with anyone else only if the law requires it.
UPI payments
Chukta doesn’t handle money. When you settle up, we open your UPI app with the payee’s UPI ID, name, amount and a note filled in. The payment happens entirely in that app: we never see your bank details, card numbers or UPI PIN. Afterwards we ask whether the payment went through, and record it only if you say yes.
Splitwise import
Uploading the spreadsheet Splitwise lets you export for a group will be the main way to bring your history over (coming soon). You pick the file, and we use what’s in it only to create those groups and expenses in Chukta.
Importing straight from your Splitwise account is built but switched off for now. If we turn it on, you’d sign in to Splitwise and approve access there. The access key would stay on our server, never in the app, and be deleted as soon as the import finishes.
Where it’s stored and how it’s protected
Your data is stored with Supabase in Singapore, so it’s kept outside India. It travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and access is checked on every request so you only ever receive rows you’re allowed to see. Secret keys stay on our servers and are never shipped inside the app.
How long we keep it
- Your account and data: for as long as you have an account.
- Deleted expenses: kept for 30 days so you can undo, then permanently removed.
- Crash reports: up to 90 days, then deleted by Sentry.
- Splitwise account access, if that import is turned on: deleted as soon as your import finishes.
Your choices and rights
- Change your name, UPI ID and currency any time in Profile.
- Delete your account any time in the app: Profile → Delete account.
- Get a copy of your data, or ask us to delete your account, by emailing [email protected] from the address you sign in with. We’ll reply within 30 days.
- Turn off notifications in your phone’s settings at any time.
Expenses you share are also part of your friends’ records. When you delete your account, your name, email, photo and UPI ID are removed. Expenses you shared stay for the others as “Deleted user”, so their balances stay correct.
Depending on where you live, you may have more rights under laws such as India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Write to us and we’ll help.
Children
Chukta is meant for adults. Please don’t use it if you’re under 18. If you think a child has signed up, email us and we’ll delete the account.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. For important changes we’ll also tell you in the app before they take effect.
